Our friends at Haymaker TV invited us to design a show package for their brand-new tv show on Disney+. Our team started with concepts for logos based on the working title “Lie Spy” and later adapted our designs to the show’s final title, “The Big Fib.” Hear more about the Pixeldust creative process below.

THE CONCEPT

The Big Fib is based on the hilarious podcast “Pants On Fire.” The show sees two grown-ups claim to be experts, but one of them is lying. Kids have to use their critical thinking skills, their power of observation, and their gut instincts to determine who is telling “the big fib.” The show features fascinating facts, tricky fibs, a supportive host, a plucky human child, and an all-knowing goofy robot. The Executives at Disney+ were interested in a design firm capable of producing a fun, engaging graphics package that appeals to viewers of all ages.

OUR SOLUTION

With that fun brief in mind, our team started to dig in. As always, we conducted extensive research to come up with a wide range of possible ideas and styles. We developed several story-lines for the opening sequence. We designed multiple logos and created style frames that ranged from the childish to the cool, but it wasn’t until we presented three wacky yet wildly different concepts that the client saw what they were after. To our delight, the client chose our Wes Anderson-inspired designs. Good choice!

LOGO DEVELOPMENT

Even though “lying” is pervasive in today’s fake news world. The show is based on that premise, so it’s amusing to see how easy it is to tell half-truths, now we just needed to convey that visually. We wanted to approach this project from a positive angle, so we pitched a fun-minded and positive message.

How can kids learn that everyone isn’t who they appear to be? What are the tells of a liar? With that in mind, we started with the creation of a range of different fonts, illustrations, and iconography.

We collaborated with the client to narrow down the universe of ideas we proposed and decided to go with a logo that it’s built out of the elements of the story, and that works as well in animation as in still-images, given that there was a large marketing campaign behind the show.

The logos shown here are a selection of our work.

FINAL GRAPHICS

The final look of the show evokes the feeling of an encyclopedia of knowledge – yet a slightly twisted one. Look at the cute piggy! But why is it flying?

An astronaut is standing on the moon. Oh wait, he’s standing on a brain? A T-Rex stomping in high heels? Not all is always what it seems
